A SHORT HISTORY LESSON = WHY IS THERE A 2ND AMENDMENT
HINT = The 2nd Amendment is not for hunting, shooting trap or target shooting!
“A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined…” – George Washington, First Annual Address, to both House of Congress, January 8, 1790
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.” – Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Constitution, Draft 1, 1776
“What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.” – Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, December 20, 1787
1774 – 1775 British confiscated guns and banned gun powder. Parliament passed the COERCIVE act in 1774 allowing them to use force (military) to carry out the confiscation of arms.
The result of this and other issues resulted in the American Revolution. In 1776 the Declaration of Independence was signed. June 21, 1788 the US Constitution was ratified by the 9th state but it was not until May 29, 1790 that the 13th Colony ratified the US Constitution. Among the amendments was the 2nd amendment: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed is that portion that most people forget about. This phrase was placed into the 2nd Amendment precisely because of the colonist experiences with Great Britain and they wanted their citizens to safeguard against a tyrannical government (MEANING THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT).
TODAY we have states and cities around the country passing what they consider to be common sense gun laws. These houses of government claim these laws are to protect the people. Gun owners fear this overreach by their government in the same way the Colonist feared the overreach of the British Government.
Shawano County is discussing the possibility of adopting a version of a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County resolution. How can we assist?
